Congratulations to my alma mater for winning the National Championship.

Throughout the night, many people got the credit they deserve for our performance: Vince Young, Mack Brown, Gene Chizik, Michael Huff, and so on… But there’s one name that has been left out: Greg Davis. I remember a few years ago, we were all calling him out and asking him to get booted. But words simply can’t describe the job that he did this season, especially yesterday.

The Eyes of Texas ARE upon us, all the live long day.

Many of you saw the amazing plays by Vince Young throughout the whole game, but as the clock winded down, we all saw Mack Brown talking to Dusty with a huge smile on both their faces. They know what this all means. During the post-game press conference, the media asked Brown what was said to Dusty before he sent him out onto the field.

Brown said, “I told him that he was the luckiest human being in the world, that on his last kick at the University of Texas, he was going to get to be the hero. And that he was a great young man, and he was a very confident young man. He had made every big kick in his career. There was absolutely no question in my mind that this one was already good. And I told him that they were going to call two time outs, so just get ready for that. And then I brought our group over in front of him and said, ‘if you all protect, the kick is good, so you all need to help him. Don’t relax.’ And he did just that.”

What many viewers don’t recongnize is that the last second field goal was actually a miracle. As I stood at Ben’s Half Yard on Saturday evening, clinching the hands of my fellow longhorns and putting my horns up, I noticed that the kick was awfully wobbly. And after reading the forums at night, I found this:

Talk about a great game. The chances of a tipped 37 yard field goal is fairly slim. If Prescott Burgess had jumped an inch to the left, the sports nation, the sports writers and critics, and the jealous aggys would be singing a different tune.

But in the end, it was the tune of “Texas Fight” that was played after Mangum’s FG attempt, it was the tune of “The Eyes of Texas” that was met with the cheer of the crowd, it was a bunch of burnt orange claded fans that was jumping up and down at sports bars across the nation. And in the end, DID the BCS actually get it right this year with the loss of Cal to Texas Tech??

Bowl season is a very strange time when I find myself cheering for sand aggys, aggys, and (God forbid) even the Sooners. The Big 12 has the best record so far in bowl games, so let’s hope OU will finish strong so that I can actually say that I was at the National Championship game in person this year (although it was played in Dallas in October).

Anyways, I’ll leave with this for all the Cal fans out there.
