I’m back!!!

By Pete, June 29, 2009 12:39 pm

I kind of always knew that it was only a matter of time before I move my blog back to my domain after I moved it to wordpress.com a few weeks ago. Due to the limitations to the embeded materials over at wordpress.com, I decided to migrate the blog back to my own domain. So please check update your bookmarks/RSS feeds accordingly… Thanks!!!

A Farewell to "Bistro 2404"

By Pete, April 19, 2009 10:28 pm

Going out with a bang.

Tonight was apparently the grand finale of “Bistro  2404″ – a little hole-in-the-wall bistro located somewhere in my fantasy that just happened to be a few feet from where I sleep. The grand finale was, ironically, my choice for my “last meal on earth” – paella (and not just any paella, but paella made from lobster stock). If you’re a seafood fan and have never had a good paella before, there are 2 small containers in my fridge that you might be able to claim if you take Matt out.

After I added the last picture to the “Bistro 2404″ set (slideshow) onto my flickr, I decided to take a look back at how this all got started. The first picture was uploaded 11/22/2007 – when we opened up our house to Vox for Thanksgiving. I had agreed to make the turkey and I threw in a corn relish on the side. Then eventually, that led to having neighborhoods at our place (even though it was all guys and Jen). Then somewhere along the way, I joined the volunteer program at Central Market. Then the rest is history. Even though culinarily, I’ve come a long ways since November of 2007, I feel like I should really thank all the friends gracious enough to compliment me on my cooking and, more importantly – at times, brave enough to try ANYTHING I make (the braised beef tongue was a hard sell at first, but eventually all the roommates tried and loved it).

For those of you that have kept up with my blog, you might be wondering why I’ve taken my personally blog off my own domain and moved it here to wordpress.com. This is probably as good a time to tell y’all as any, seeing how I usually start blog posts and never finish it. So here I go… While I haven’t hammered out the details yet, I am excited to share that I’ll be starting a new blog/food project on my domain. Be sure to periodically check up here for when I’ll launch the new site. It’s going to be fun. =)

In all seriousness however, I should probably tell you all now that I’m not a rock star in the kitchen – there’re countless people better in the kitchen than me. I just think food is important. It was really over the course of the last year or so that I got to really see the importance of food. There’re many reason why I do what I do. I love seeing a random group of people get together for a meal, I love seeing friends being made, I love seeing the moment when people are getting introduced to new flavors, I love seeing people agonize over how awesome something taste, I laugh when people pass out after a meal. I abso-freakin’-lutely love all of that. So let me take this opportunity again to thank those that have helped me carry out this little fantasy bistro of mine for this. Here’s to all the memories of “Bistro 2404″ and all the potentials for the new place that still remains nameless.

Thanks Sheila P.!!

So I was trying to setup a read-only FTP account to my web/web server, but there wasn’t such an option in my control panel tools. Here’s the conversation (I have taken out the operator’s last name and also the security authentication process), please keep in mind that about 10 minutes had elapsed between each of her responses:

pete: hello?
Sheila P.: Hi Pete, My name is Sheila P., how are you today?
pete: i’m ok
pete: i have a question regarding the ftp function of my website
Sheila P.: Yes, sure.
— Security Authentication Process —
pete: anyways – i created a new user today
pete: and i was wondering if i could limit the user to just a read only account
pete: on the ftp server
Sheila P.: Could you please elaborate your issue in more specific so that I can assist you?
pete: i just created a new user in the ftp function of my control panel
pete: i want to limit the new user (which i just created) to have only the right to access the files
pete: as opposed to have the right to read AND write
pete: is there a way i can do that?
pete: there’s no such option in the ftp function in the control panel
Sheila P.: In order to allow the rights to read and write you need to give the File Permission.
pete: for the user?
Sheila P.: Do you wish to give a File Permission to a particular file?
pete: no. i’m trying to limit a particular ftp user’s rights
Chat InformationChat session has been terminated by the site operator.

I got the online equivalent of getting hung up on by freakin’ tech support!! I probably should have “hung up” after I saw that I wasn’t chatting with India or maybe even after the file permission topic getting brought up, but I was hoping that they’d have someone a little bit more knowledgeable on the other end of this tech support chat.

Personally, I thought I did a pretty good job of asking a very specific question to tech support. So was it me? Or did Sheila accidently trip and closed the window?? I would have gladly accepted “that’s not a function that we have available at the moment” or “I don’t know, let me transfer you to someone who does”. I wonder how many times Sheila trips and closes windows all day.

WordPress 2.5

By Pete, April 7, 2008 10:00 am

WordPress 2.5 upgrade is almost complete. As far as the development of WordPress is concerned, the jump from 2.4 (I am only assuming that it was 2.4, I only remember upgrading to 2.3.x) is huge. With a new UI and a bunch other new features, I felt inspired to change the theme up and make this a little bit easier on the eyes (and load time).

During my upgrade, I had a slight run-in with my the new theme that I’m implementing – specifically IE6 issues. At first, I was contemplating not messing with it and leaving you IE users out there in the dust. But I had to reconsider that after a quick glance at the last 6 months’ worth of stats – An overwhelming majority of ya’ll are still using internet explorer (on windows – shame on you!! =P). I’ve always assumed that this knowledge is common, but internet explorer sucks!!

C’mon friends! I’d like to see an improvement in the stats over the summer for Firefox/Safari/Opera.

Read what I've read!!!

By Pete, September 20, 2007 2:22 pm

Not that I read a lot of profound blogs/websites, but once every blue moon, I’ll come across something interesting that I’d like to share…

So without further ado, feel free to check out the new block on the sidebar on the right. (For those of you reading this on RSS, subscribe to this feed via Google reader). I’m pretty sure there’ll be new additions everyday. I’m also thinking about bringing back the forum so there will be a free space for people to discuss/debate things, but I am going to have to work out a few more details before that becomes official. Until then, have a good one people!

"Always Back Up Your Files"

By Pete, August 2, 2007 8:22 pm

You can file this under the “Advice that I knew I should have followed but I am still young and foolish” category.

I’ve been meaning to upgrade to the latest WP installation for like a month now. For some reason, when I finally had some time today to do the upgrade, I decided that I wanted to do it right then and there. I usually work on my website on my desktop (not that I prefer PC, but I do prefer having 2 monitors to work with), but since I’m “homeless” for a few more weeks, I didn’t have that luxury today. So I was using a new program that I wasn’t familiar with and I just hit the overwrite all button when prompted (which I usually do, but it only overwrite the actual files, as opposed to the folders as well). So needless to say, I lost a lot of code and uploaded stuff. Whoops.

So it looks like the next few weeks will be website restoration time. Continue to check back for design updates. =)

New site design

By Pete, October 8, 2006 7:41 pm

I redesigned my blog today. If you’re actually reading this blog from the website (as opposed to via RSS or Facebook), you’ll probably notice that Google and Amazon threw up on my site. Why am I doing this? Well, I’d be lying if I say that I’m not interested in the revenue. But aside from the revenue, I’m pretty interested at how this whole online advertising thing works (as far as the payout is concerned). So over the course of the next few weeks/months, you’ll probably see a few changes here and there, let’s see how much revenue this will bring in.

This all started from wanting to plan a trip for next summer, but I figured I could post a lot of crap on the board and keep up with friends who are far away. Let’s see how this expierment goes.

New Hosting Service

By Pete, June 10, 2006 10:49 am

Anyone got recommendations to a good web hosting service? Price is not necessarily to top issue for me, although I’d like to keep the cost down as much as possible. My main concern is with amount of scripts installed on the server and also the amount of databases and connection I can have. If anyone has any recommendations, please email me and let me know. Thanks.
