WANTED: Chicago Eateries Recommendations

By Pete, June 29, 2009 5:37 pm

I’m heading up to Chicago for the long weekend on Thursday and was wondering if you have a restaurant recommendation to add to my fairly long list of restaurants to go check out. Keep in mind that it’s Taste of Chicago weekend, so any restaurant that’ll already be at taste will probably not merit a visit from me. Assuming room for only lunch and dinner (ha!), I’ll have 7 meals in Chicago. I have blocked off all Saturday for Taste so there goes 2 slots and also have made plans for 3 other slots. So that leaves a grand total of 2 slots open, I’m pretty sure I’m going to spend one of them on a nice Chicago Style deep dish place. So really that only leaves one spot open (lol). Fortunately, I’ll have fellow foodies Carol & Tiem showing me around as my accomplices, so I’m sure they’ll have good suggestions if all else fails.

Here’s what I got lined up so far:
avec
Hot Doug’s
Alinea

Here’re some ideas I have for the 1 (or possibly 2, if someone has awesome suggestions) that I want to do with the openings:
Chicago Style Pizza
Ramen
Dim Sum
Oh and as far as I know breakfast is all open too, if I’m crazy.

Either way, there’re only so much time and so much I can eat. I’d appreicate it if you leave me some suggestions in the comments section. Thanks in advance and fire away!!

I’ve had deep dish stuffed pizza at Giordano’s (http://www.giordanos.com/) before but I didn’t think it was that great. I’m biased towards thin crust pizza though so you might still want to give it a go… it’s pretty well reviewed if i remember correctly.

btw, i like the new look around here. glad you’re back on your own domain. oh and you still owe me a paella post! :D

I’ve been to Taste of Chicago a few times (twice, at least) and I don’t think it’s two-meal quality. you should consider just going there for one meal and open up another meal slot. never been to the three places on your list, but I always recommend deep dish pizza (Giordano’s and Gino’s East are the two big places), a Chicago hot dog, Tango Sur (Argentinean steak place, so good but not close to metro. Joy Hsu and I used to go), Orange (for brunch… YUUUM), San Soo Gab San (Korean bbq open 23 hrs – order the family deal). dim sum in Chicago is eh, not even close to Dallas or Houston, and never had ramen there. be sure to order a local brew when you’re there. I like Goose Island’s 312 Urban Wheat Ale, if you’re into that kind of thing. do you need non-food (i.e. cool places to see) suggestions?

@Becky – Yeah, that’s on my long to do list. If you’re looking to make it soon, let me know. I might just type it out and email it to you for the time being. =D

@Kelly – Sure!! I’ll take any recommendation you give! =)

well, the usual spots are the Art Institute, Millennium Park (and taking photos with “The Bean”), Magnificent Mile aka Michigan Ave., go to the top of the Hancock tower for drinks and a great view, Wrigley Field, Sears Tower, Navy Pier… these are all pretty standard. there should be fireworks off the lake at night – should be fun but crowded.
