Judge Marilyn O'Connor
Background: Judge O’Connor, who presides a family court in NY, ordered a woman to stop having children. The woman, who’s had 7 childs with 7 different men (3 of her child were tested positive for cocaine at birth), would be jailed for contempt if she has another child. Civil rights activists organizations such as the New York Civil Liberties Union is appealing the decision because it “tramples on a fundamental right — the right to procreate.” Full Story on CNN.com
Here’s a TOAST to Judge O’Connor for making a radical decision (albeit a little unconventional and a bit controversial) to have this woman step up to her responsibility. Judge O’Connor’s decision is not to bar the woman from having children ever again, but to prevent her from more reckless behavior that’s causing the taxpayers more money. (6 of her 7 children are under state care in foster homes and 1 is with a relative).
I can’t fathom any reason why any taxpayers money should towards someone’s irresponsibility. When someone is having children in that manner, they’re not really taking any account for the child’s well being.
When it comes to the question of if procreation is a right, I don’t think it is. I don’t think everyone has a right to have sex and have a child. If procreation is a right, any man would be able to go up to any woman and be able to exercise that right, and that’s just disgusting.
I hope these groups and organization find a better fight to pick.
